Goodbye Chicago, Hello Munich!

First of all, I apologize for the lack of blog posts. Wrapping up our time in Chicago we had some fantastic lectures from John Mallet and Randy Mosher. We even got to do a pairing of cheeses and desserts with Randy Mosher. The last week in Chicago was focused on the business of brewing and case studies.

Germany!!! This is Doemens Academy where we are continuing our brewing education. We are only a small part of the school, most of the students there are part of 1 or 2 year courses that are taught in German.
Getting the tour of the brewing facilities at Doemens. They have a full 4 vessel system with packaging etc.

We have had a significant amount of beer at the beer gardens and beer halls

Wilder Hirsch is a little beer garden right by school. It has quickly become many of the students second home. It is right on the river, so I am sure we will be having many a beer there during the summer.

They even have kegs of water for dogs at the beer gardens!



We took a quick trip to Aying and had dinner at Ayinger. It was a really neat little town.

Fresh from the cask, they tap one each evening and serve it until it is gone. We had a helles which was deliciously fresh.

Laundry day! Although some people have dryers, it is in general thought to be an unnecessary luxury.
We also took a day trip to Weihenstephan. This is the location of the highest regarded brewing school in the world. Most of our instructors at Doemens are graduates from Weihenstephan. It is also the oldest brewery in the world and they claim to have been founded in 1040. One of our instructors told us that the document that supports that claim is a fake, but it is still really really old.





Beer tasting line up! This tasting started at 730am and lasted 5 hours.
Day trip to Andechs brewery in a monastary. Although the brewery was not open, we still got to walk around a bit and it was beautiful.

Sauerkraut beer, which was surprisingly good. 

I got a bike...The Excelsior! 
Now I can make it to school in 10 min, which means an extra 20 min to sleep.
Tried my hand at traditional German dinner. Turned out good, but I am pretty sure that it is impossible to mess up spƤtzle.

Ok that it for this post. I will try to keep up, maybe just posting a few pictures here and there.
